Least Restrictive Environment

The least restrictive environment, or LRE, is a term you will hear many times throughout your child’s IEP journey. For some reason, districts seem to be confused about the meaning of the LRE. But, it’s actually very simple: the least restrictive environment means the environment that offers the most access to peers without disabilities and the general education curriculum. A parent reported to me recently that she’s heard the school district claim that an adult aide offering support in a general education classroom is more restrictive than receiving education in a separate special day class. When an aide is properly trained, this is absolutely false. If you’re concerned about your child’s placement and want to know their options, give me a call!
