The high school diploma track is one of the options for students with special needs. As a former high school teacher, I know how quickly those four years can go by. When a child has special needs, this time in high school seems to move even faster. In order to earn a diploma, a student needs to take all of the required classes and meet the minimum grade requirements. Be sure to familiarize yourself with what your child’s school district requires. It’s never too early to start planning! It’s important to lay a good foundation as early as possible; does your child have the ability to self advocate regarding his or her educational needs? Can he or she keep track of assignments and important dates? How well can your child read and comprehend? These foundational skills, among others, can be included in your child’s IEP at any age and any skill level. Let me know if your IEP team needs some help with ideas!
