📚✏️Back to School Checklist Step 2

✅ Step 2️⃣

✨After you’ve made an initial contact with the professionals supporting your child this year, I advise clients that it’s always a good idea to make sure you understand your child’s daily and weekly schedule.

For example, where does your child start and end their day? Where do they eat lunch and snack? Who helps them with reading instruction? What are they missing when they are pulled out of class for speech therapy? How many students are in that speech group? When are there extra supports in class that can help your child, and when aren’t there (i.e. instructional aide/supplemental support, student teacher, peer tutors, assistive technology, etc)?

There are a few reasons why this is important:

  1. This will help you know how much general education versus separate special education time your child is receiving, plus where their SAI (specialized academic instruction) is taking place and with whom.

  2. You can keep track of services to make sure your child is receiving what their IEP says they should be receiving, with service providers who are properly trained and credentialed to provide that instruction or service.

  3. If you notice your child is struggling with a certain behavior, academic subject, or IEP goal, this gives you more background information to help the IEP team problem solve.

  4. You can work on communication and recall skills at home by talking to your child about his or her school day.
